To teach myself After Effects, I decided to tell the story of how I found my passion and share my belief on what a “passion” really is through a whiteboard-style, animation video. This turned out to be a not-so-easy starter project haha.
Creating the write-on effect involved transparency keying using the paint tool and pre-compositions to create animations within animations. I also learned about masking elements to create the thought bubbles without any transparency bleed from the other elements.
Learning to manipulate a 3D camera inside of AE is also really cool. That is when I realized that I am animating a 3D environment and manipulating cameras, sets, and characters all together in one program: which is amazing!
The coolest part of this project, however, was learning to use expressions. This is where my background in computer science and my passion for storytelling really came together. I used coding based principles (for loops, if statements, members) to make a movie. It was the most amazing thing to see that connection and see a path for my life starting to unfold.
It is still unfinished, and I still have a lot to do and learn, but I am having a lot of fun with it so far!
